Alexander Adam, head of Natural Resources and Environment Protection Department of Administration of Tomsk region

– We no longer need weapons-graded plutonium reactors

The Seversk reactor worked on weapons-graded plutonium and we no longer need them. Until we build a nuclear power plant, we will operate coal-fueled plant. Today, we are running short of energy. That’s why we are planning to build an NPP.

The radiation situation in Seversk is within norm. We have the best in Russia automated radiation control system – 26 sensors constantly monitoring the radiation situation in the area and sending information to three independent controllers (at the Seversk administration, at the Hydro-meteorological Center of Tomsk and the Natural Resources and Environment Protection Department of the Administration of Tomsk region) each 8 minutes.
