Yuri Semchenkov, Director of Nuclear Reactor Institute of Kurchatov Institute

– It is necessary to develop concept of new SUPER-WWER reactor

Established in the summer 2007, Atomenergprom OJSC is now summing up the results of its first year. The company has been developing against the background of the large-scale reformation of the nuclear sector. The holding is supposed to consolidate the efforts of all civilian nuclear companies in order to effectively implement the large-scale NPP construction program and to promote Russian high technologies on the international market.

One of the key events of the past year was the licensing of NPP-2006 project. This project is an improved version of previous WWER reactors. Two such reactors will be built at Novovoronezh NPP-2 and Leningrad NPP-2. NPP-2006 project with WWER-1200 reactor (1,200MW) is a milestone in the history of reactor building and one step upward in the evolution of WWER reactors.

Presently, we are building several nuclear reactors, including the 2nd unit of Rostov NPP and the 4th unit of Kalinin NPP.

This year we have selected construction sites for planned NPPs and have started design and survey work on South Ural, Nizhniy Novgorod, Kostroma, Tver and Baltic NPPs.

As regards our NPP construction projects abroad, Atomstroyexport has already started to build two units of Belene NPP in Bulgaria and is completing the construction of two units in India and one in Iran. The company has been selected to finish the construction of the 3rd and 4th WWER-440 reactors of Mohovce NPP in Slovakia and has won a tender for Khmelnitsky NPP in Ukraine. Atomstroyexport is also very close to victory in the tender for the construction of 5GW NPP in Turkey and has already signed a contract for building the 3rd and 4th units of Tianwan NPP.

I would also like to point out the achievements of TVEL, which is actively enlarging its presence on the market and is even developing fuel assemblies for PWR reactors. One of the latest achievements is the conclusion of a contract for complex supply of fuel to all Slovak NPPs after 2010 and provision of fuel fabrication services.

Our key task for the next year is development of concept of new SUPER-WWER reactor.
