The reaction of Areva was emotional as that company has lost its key partner in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy. Siemens-Rosatom joint venture is a serious rival, enjoying much better opportunities on the world market due to its know-hows and international ties, Stefan Meister, Program Office for Russia/Eurasia of the German Council on Foreign Relations has told Regnum.ru.
The key problem for Siemens in its alliance with Areva was that the French partner pushed its own strategy and refused to make concessions. That problem was existent for quite a long time. So, I was not surprised to know that Siemens had broken away. Nor was it a surprise for Areva. I think that the emotional response of the French is just rhetoric especially as Siemens-Areva alliance was more symbolic than strategic partnership. Now, Siemens is getting closer to Russia in this field.
