– In the face of crisis, large-scale state investment projects are strategically important for any region

Public hearings on the preliminary environmental impact assessment of the project to build and operate the 1st and 2nd units of Tver Nuclear Power Plant took place in Udomlia July 8 2009. Representatives of Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, Energoatom Concern, the authorities of Tver region, Udomlia and Udomlia district, public organizations and mass media as well as residents of Udomlia district took part in the hearings. The representative of the general designer of Tver NPP-the deputy chief engineer of the project of Nizhniy Novgorod Atomenerpgoekt Sergey Kuvardin was the key speaker of the hearings. He said that the construction of Tver NPP would boost investments and tax revenues and would ensure the economic security and stability of the region. According to the preliminary estimates of Nizhniy Novgorod Atomenergoproekt, throughout its service life the plant will pay 40bln RUR in profit tax, 50bln RUR in property tax, 1bln RUR in land tax, 50mlnRUR in transport tax.

It is obvious that the key consumer of the new nuclear power plant will be Moscow region rather than Tver. Stably operating NPPs are the most appropriate source of energy for big manufacturing companies needing round-the-clock power supply (mining, oil refining and other companies) or big cities.

The industrial potential of Tver region is not very big and the key reason why the Government has decided to build a new NPP in there is that this region has necessary infrastructure (the site and the personnel of Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant and power networks).

The authorities of the region are interested in this project: the construction of a new NPP will boost the region’s tax revenues and will create new highly paid jobs. This will certainly improve the local social-economic situation. In the face of crisis, large-scale state investment projects are strategically important for any region.
