Prime Minister of Russia Vladimir Putin has approved the construction of Baltic Nuclear Power Plant in Kaliningrad region. Hence, the Government of Russia has approved Rosatom’s project to build 2,300MW NPP in Kaliningrad region. The Ministry of Energy and Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation have been instructed to make proposals on revision of the general scheme for allocation of power facilities in Russia till 2020.
I welcome the construction of Baltic Nuclear Power Plant. I can’t say what Lithuania’s attitude towards this project will be but I would welcome its decision to finance it as we all know that in 2010 Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant will be shut down. I would like Lithuania to receive energy from Russia not just as sufferance but as an investor, the owner of part of this project. I think that the Baltic NPP project will guarantee safe supply of electricity into our country. I will promote this project in the parliament as it is profitable in terms of both economy and security.
The 1st unit of Baltic Nuclear Power Plant is supposed to be built in 2010–2016, the 2nd one in 2012–2018. The preparations will be started in early 2010. 51% of the project will belong to the state, 49% — to private investor.
