— I think Russia has quite good chances to keep the leading position in the Indian market.

On 11th November 2009 Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Sergei Sobyanin visited the site area of Kudankulam APP in India, where Russia’s power units of design (VVER-1000) are built. Answering journalists’ questions after the inspection, Sergei Sobyanin noted that «the blocks are built on the latest technologies, using the most modern security systems.» «There is no doubt that this will be the most powerful and reliable nuclear power plants in India. We are pleased with the Russo-Indian cooperation in the field of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, there are great prospects in the sphere of peaceful atomic energy „, — said Deputy Prime Minister.

According to him, Russia and India looked forward to the end of the year to sign documents for the construction of the 3rd and 4th units of Kudankulam APP. «It means that before the end 2010 on the third unit one can have time to come to the stage of the « first concrete «. In addition the Government of India has formally notified Russia’s side that they have provided one more platform for the construction of the APP with nuclear reactors of Russia’s design in another region of India [West Bengal], — said Sergei Sobyanin. «At the present time in India there is 15% energy deficit that restrains the rapid economic growth. Therefore, putting into operation of new generation capacities in India is certainly the most important task. It is difficult to replace here a nuclear power plant with something else, because they are really the objects with advanced technology applied «- said Deputy Prime Minister.

Anna Kupriyanova, senior analyst of Department of analytical researches of “URALSIB Capital Ltd.“:

— I think Russia has quite good chances to keep the leading position in the Indian market. First, our country has always maintained a leading position in emerging markets and India belongs to one of them. Secondly, if the information that the new contract will be signed soon, will be confirmed then this signing would have to consolidate our positions in the Indian market.
