On July 14 the Turkish parliament ratified the Russian-Turkish agreement on construction of the first NPP in the country. The agreement was signed on May 12, 2010 in Ankara. Russia and Turkey hereunder will cooperate in the field of construction and operation of the NPP in Akkuyu in south Mersin province. After entry of this agreement into effect the Russian party will start the creation of the project campaign. The future NPP capacity is expected to be 4800 mW that is equal to 14% of todays capacity generated by Turkey.
Denis Demin, Deputy Managing Director of Lenmontazhstroy IC:
Nuclear power industry is an expensive branch and commercial operation of its results must both recover expenditures and, ideally, ensure development.
Construction of nuclear generating capacities is becoming more intense all over the world, even in the countries without such experience, opening new markets for the leading world players including Atomstroyexport.
Turkey intends to construct three NPPs in all and the fact that Rosatom has the chance of participation in the first one construction provide a means for further work at other projects.
It’s evident that while choosing the partner the Turkish party first of all relied upon economic considerations. Competitive ability of Atomstroyexport at world markets is still high and even Turkey’s closer political relations with ÅÑ did not prevent the Russian company from entering the market of this country.
Naturally, cooperation in nuclear power industry implies existence of stable political relations and their weakening is hazardous for nuclear cooperation.
Thus, Bulgarian authorities have lately occupied a controversial position concerning completion of Belene NPP construction.
But we can’t directly link the energy projects progress in Bulgaria and Turkey: Turkey has thought over the nuclear facilities construction since early 2000-s and the tender for NPP construction in Akkuyu was held in 2008.
Besides, the both countries in the nearest future will gain weight as energy centers of the region and it will be first of all connected with gas and oil transportation infrastructure.
