Roman Kopin, the governor of the Chukotka Autonomous District:

 — The FNTPP construction in Pevek city will be the key event of this modernization.

The project of floating nuclear thermal power plant construction (FNTPP) is vital for social and economic development of the Chukotka Autonomous District and is the key element of the region development strategy. This was announced by Roman Kopin, the governor of the Chukotka Autonomous District, during the meeting with representatives of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC and Atomenergo CJSC on August 26, 2010.

Roman Kopin, the governor of the Chukotka Autonomous District:

Construction of floating nuclear thermal power plants by Rosenergoatom Concern is vital for northern regions, which traditionally lack generating capacities. For the Chukotka Autonomous District the construction of a nuclear power plant is important because it is necessary to replace Chaun TPP, Pevek city which outlived its usefulness long ago. Moreover, the construction of a FNTPP as a key power facility is included in the Social and Economic Development Strategy of the Chukotka Autonomous District till 2020.

The plant is to stimulate further development of Chaun-Bilibino industrial hub which possesses the biggest reserves of gold, silver, copper, and nonferrous metals. This area of economic development has one of Russian best gold deposits – Mayskoe and Kupol, facilities with high-grade ore – Karalveyev and Dvoynoye, many perspective gold ore fields and centers. Chaun-Bilibino pool also has Russian biggest tin and copper deposits – Pyrkakaysk ore folds and Peshanka respectively. Today the complete development of these facilities is impossible without modernization of the energy infrastructure of the Chukotka Autonomous District. The FNTPP construction in Pevek city will be the key event of this modernization.
