Grigory Tynankergav, Chairman of Council of Elders of Chukotka Indigenous Minorities:

 — It is apparent that history repeats itself: by means of the FNTPP construction in Pevek we will provide the opportunity for implementation of the most prospective projects throughout the district

The project of floating nuclear thermal power plant construction (FNTPP) is vital for social and economic development of the Chukotka Autonomous District and is the key element of the region development strategy. This was announced by Roman Kopin, the governor of the Chukotka Autonomous District, during the meeting with representatives of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC and Atomenergo CJSC on August 26, 2010.

Grigory Tynankergav, Chairman of Council of Elders of Chukotka Indigenous Minorities:

The indigenous groups have a positive attitude towards the FNTPP construction in Pevek city. I talked to many people before and after the public consultations. And I made sure that people were waiting for this project. They have hopes not only for general Chukotka development, but also for the revival of its separate areas which decayed in the 90-ies. The representatives of our Council of Elders attended the public consultations and highly appreciated them: we were visited by true professionals who were eager to clarify to every participant the position of the general contractor and design engineers as well as to answer all the citizens’ questions. That is why the people do not worry about safety – they have got exhaustive information.

I’ve been studying Chukotka mineral resources since 1958. Until recently I’ve been the Head of Department of Subsurface and Water Resources Management and Licensing of the district administration – therefore I know about the natural wealth of our land perfectly well. It is necessary to develop Chukotka. But it is impossible to perform it without development of the nuclear power industry. One can see that the volumes of geologic exploration are increasing. Seven more auction sales for subsurface resources management will have been held by the end of the year. It is natural that the license holders will be interested in the mining works speeding. I have no doubts that this will provide better living for the whole population of Chukotka.

It is remarkable that the development of Chukotka in the Soviet times was started with the development of Chaun and Bilibino district. It is apparent that history repeats itself: by means of the FNTPP construction in Pevek we will provide the opportunity for implementation of the most prospective projects throughout the district. And in course of time their number will only increase — our land is rich, and the interest in it is increasing with each year. That is why Chukotka indigenous groups stand for the FNTPP construction.
