Sergey Baranovsky, academic, President of Russian Green Cross

– Security should be the priority of the nuclear power sector development in 2007

“This year, as always, security should be the key task of the Russian nuclear power engineers. It is really necessary to develop nuclear power engineering in Russia, there is no alternative to it, but we should also foresee the consequences,” says Baranovsky.

“We already know how to liquidate and prevent nuclear accidents. We should take all necessary precautions so that our children do not feel the negative consequences of growing nuclear power engineering,” says Baranovsky.

“Baranovsky says that the international uranium enrichment center opened in Angarsk will have no negative impact on ecology.

“I have been in Angarsk. I have seen the situation myself, met with people and talked with specialists and I believe that the center will pose no threat to the ecological situation in the area,” says Baranovsky.

“Formerly, this center worked at 10% of its capacity and was ecologically safe. Now, its capacity will be raised to 25%. International specialists will monitor its activities and I don’t think that it will have any impact on the environment.”

“Baranovsky admits that, as part of the nuclear fuel production cycle, uranium enrichment is certainly a dangerous process. However, the center employs real professionals for whom this process is just a daily routine.
