In late 2006 the Russian Government decided to make Angarsk Electrolytic Chemical Combine an open enterprise and to use it as a basis for an international uranium enrichment center. Deputy Director Generation of the Institute of Safe Development of Nuclear Power Sector of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IBRAE RAN) Igor Linge comments on the project:
I don’t think that the enlargement of the Angarsk enterprise under the international uranium enrichment center project will cause any ecological problems.
This enterprise is operative and has had no ecological impacts so far. The center will be under close control. Besides, the project will not be so large as to cause any problems.
