Viktor Opekunov, Chairman of Sub-Committee on Nuclear Energy of State Duma Committee on Energy, Transport and Communication

— I think that the nuclear construction in India will be carried out under the NPP-2006 project

«Today, we are completing the construction of two VVER-1000 units at Kudankulam NPP in India. The construction is being carried out by the Indians, while we are supervising them, drafting the documentation and supplying the equipment. The experience we are acquiring under this project is really invaluable.»

I welcome the decision on the construction of 4 more units. I very much hope that there we will work even better than under the first project. I think that this construction will be carried out under the NPP-2006 project, because it is an integrated project (it was applied at Tianwan NPP in China): it integrates our best achievements and experience.

I would like to say that, today, India has very ambitious programs, which go far beyond the Kudankulam site. India’s population is over 1 bln, while the energy supply rate is very low. Today, India is dynamically developing its economy and, consequently, it has very big plans in the energy sector.
