Sergey Komarov, Deputy Director of the Institute of Energy Development of Regions

– The nuclear power industry of the North-West can solve the problem of energy shortfall

On Feb 7 Sosnovy Bor (Leningrad region) will host public hearings of the materials on the ecological impacts of the construction and the operation of LNPP-2. A day before the hearings, Deputy Director of the Institute of Energy Development of Regions Sergey Komarov commented on the project.

LNPP-2 will be much safer for ecology than LNPP-1 is. On the one hand, we know that this project will be safer, on the other, we have few documents yet for carrying out a complex analysis and assessment of the plant’s future impact on the environment.

What we know for sure is that the NPP-2006 project — LNPP-2 is based on — is a «mixture» of all the best we have had so far, all the best Russia has built or is planning to build abroad. For example, here we are going to apply the double reactor containment we have built at Tianwan NPP (China), the alloy trap and the passive heat dumping system we have installed in India. LNPP-2 has many advantages. No doubt, nuclear energy is the safest type of energy and it can solve the problem of energy shortfall in the North-West.
