On Feb 7 Sosnovy Bor (satellite-town of Leningrad NPP) hosted public hearings of the materials on the possible impacts of the LNPP-2 project on the environment of the region. Over 800 people attended the hearings: residents of Sosnovy Bor, Leningrad region and St. Petersburg, politicians, public figures, journalists, deputies, state and municipal officials, directors of companies and even US, Finnish, Swedish and Estonian diplomats. A number of experts have commended on the results of the hearings and the prospects of energy development in the North-Western region.
Without LNPP-2 project, Sosnovy Bor would start declining in 2018 when they would have to start stopping one LNPP unit every two years, while the presence of the project is, at least, 50–60 years of bright future for the residents of the town. For the region, the project means taxes, developing machine building, jobs.
To me, this project has no alternative.
We must understand that all our mineral resources are exhaustible. Besides, in my opinion, it is better to sell the things that sell well abroad (oil and gas) and to leave more economical and efficient resources at home, for our own selves.
Technologically and economically, NPP-2006 is certainly an interesting project.
Speaking of ecology, I would like to note that after Chernobyl we have changed and improved so much in the NPP technologies that their ecological safety is out of question. And the new NPP will be even better.
