Igor Linge, deputy director of Nuclear Safety Institute

– Most modern technologies are used in the construction of new reactors

“The launch of the construction of a new reactor at Novovoronezh NPP is a very important factor. For many years our country has been trying to build something. We started some projects, then, stopped them and fell back to old technologies. This time we have started from zero, which is right: this time we are going to use modern technologies,” says the deputy director of Nuclear Safety Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences Igor Linge.

“The practice has shown that to finish old projects costs more than to carry out new ones. Old projects are based on outdated technologies and need revision of equipment. At Novovoronezh NPP we are building not just a unit, we are launching a project of serial production. This means that there will be a big industrial order and, consequently, general industrial growth.”

The new reactor of Novovoronezh NPP is a 1,000 MW reactor based on our best technological achievements. “Our institute has also taken part in this project, we have tested all solutions and all of them have proved their efficiency. Chernobyl gave a start to enhanced safety policy in our country. The new units have heavy accident prevention systems and fuel traps. This solution was first applied under our project in China. It has been examined by international experts and approved,” says Linge.

“I am glad that we have started our nuclear energy development program. We must continue it and seek to reduce the length of construction,” says Linge.
