The Northern Federal Enterprise for Treatment of Radioactive Waste (SevRAO) has launched an improved system of radiation monitoring and emergency response. The project is aimed at enhancing the preparedness of the emergency response forces and raising the efficiency of preventive measures. Now the information about the radiation situation at SevRAO and in the nearby area will be open not only for Rosatom experts but also for the authorities of Murmansk region. Next year Rosatom is planning to make the data of the REA automated radiation control systems absolutely accessible for the public. Experts say that this system will help to enhance the transparency of the nuclear power industry and to raise the public awareness of the situation in the sector.
“Just a few days ago I met with a US delegation. They came to Kurchatov to see the newly established US-Russian joint venture for the production of components for electro-mechanic equipment. They were satisfied with both the place and the infrastructure. One of their key questions was if our nuclear power plants were safe. So, the conclusion is that the more open our NPPs will be the better for our nuclear industry and economy. In the last months we have witnessed several instances of allegation about nuclear accidents. For example, this summer some sources alleged an accident at Volgodonsk NPP. Such situations will never recur if we make the information about our NPPs open to the public. In fact, we have nothing to conceal – nuclear power plants are much safer than plants working on organic fuel.”
“The radiation background statistics are no longer a secret in Kurchatov. Anyone concerned can consult the sensors of the automated radiation control system when entering the city. The Information-Analytical Center of Kursk NPP also provides such information.”
“From time to time, some ecologists appear with statements about negative effects of nuclear power plants but they adduce no proofs. Their findings are often incompetent and groundless. Fortunately, our people do not believe them – mostly because we timely inform them about the real situation.”
