Igor Orlov, Chairman of Board of Energoresource Consortium

– Only nuclear power plants can give us cheap energy

“The development of the nuclear power industry is not a narrow sectoral problem. It is the best way to supply people with energy. We will not be able to supply energy to people and companies in remote regions without additional energy sources. Floating nuclear power plants can help us in the matter.”

“Recently, the authorities of Yakutia expressed wish to build floating NPPs in their territory. During a conference in Nerungri the head of the Federal Agency for Nuclear Energy Sergey Kiriyenko and President of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Vladimir Shtykov signed an agreement for the construction of floating NPPs in Yakutia by 2013. The plants will supply energy to the population and manufacturing companies of the remote areas of the republic. The maximum capacity of the plants will make up 18 MW – they will be the smallest nuclear power plants in the world.”

“Of course, floating NPPs will not solve all the problems we have in the north and east of Russia, but they are quite good for the regions where no big power plants can be built.”

“Sooner or later the oil and gas resources will come to an end, so, we should gradually transit to nuclear power engineering, especially, in the north and far east of our country and Siberia. Otherwise, all of our plans will run into impassable tariff barriers. Only nuclear power plants can help us to reduce the energy tariffs.”

Rosatom says that as a result of the construction of floating NPPs the energy tariff in the Republic of Sakha will drop to 4 RUR/KWh.
