Semyon Dragulsky, director general of Russian Union of Energy Efficiency

– IAEA is the best guarantor of the safety of nuclear programs

Russia’s compliance with its commitments for supply of fuel to Iranian Bushehr NPP shows that the country is consistent and accurate even in such problematic situations. Now, the country that will choose to develop the safest source of energy — nuclear power production – can be sure that it will get fuel for its NPPs under IAEA’s guarantees. IAEA controls the whole process of delivery, storage, use and return of nuclear fuel and is the best guarantor of the safety of nuclear programs.

IAEA control should be enough for the countries wishing to develop peaceful nuclear energy. The fuel for Bushehr NPP is being sent beforehand in line with the standards existing in Russia and the requirement of IAEA.

The standards say that a newly built NPP should be supplied with fuel six month before its launch. After use the fuel will be returned to Russia for reprocessing and storage. Besides, Iran has promised that the fuel will be used exclusively for the needs of the plant.

Nuclear power plant is the most efficient and ecologically friendly source of energy. NPP uses unique fuel and can have much higher capacity than any other power plant. Russia’s full compliance with its fuel delivery commitments and IAEA’s close control over the process will certainly stimulate the global interest in nuclear energy.
