The 1st unit of Smolensk NPP was stopped by the automatic protection system Jan 24 2009

The stoppage has been caused by problems in the transformer.

The unit will be restarted as soon as the transformer is repaired – on Jan 26.

The 2nd unit of Smolensk NPP is in operation. The 3rd unit is under maintenance and is to be restarted in Apr 2009.

Smolensk NPP is operating safely and efficiently. The radiation situation at the plant is within norm.
